Segments, saved audiences that update themselves

Updated August 17, 2026

A segment is a saved rule, not a saved list. Membership is worked out fresh every time it is used, so a contact drops in or out automatically as their tags, activity or purchases change. You never have to re-run anything.

Where to find them. Open Marketing, then Email Campaigns, and click Segments in the page header. You can also get there from a campaign's Audience tab via Manage segments.

Building one. Click New segment, give it a name, then choose whether contacts must match All conditions or Any condition. Add up to ten conditions with Add condition. As you build, a live counter under the rules tells you how many contacts match right now, before you save anything.

The conditions available are:

  • Marketing status is, or is not, one of Subscribed, Unsubscribed, Unconfirmed, Bounced, Marked as spam.
  • Tag is on, or is not on, the contact.
  • List contains, or does not contain, the contact.
  • Date added within the last, or more than, N days.
  • Last activity within the last, or quiet for more than, N days.
  • Email activity: opened, clicked, opened nothing, or clicked nothing in the last N days.
  • Email delivered, or not delivered, in the last N days.
  • Product owned, or not owned, by the contact.
  • Offer owned, or not owned, by the contact.
  • Coupon was used, or was not used, by the contact.
  • Purchase made, or not made, in the last N days.
  • Total revenue is at least, or is less than, an amount.
  • Form submission submitted, or did not submit, a given form or any form.
  • Visited a page, has been on, or has never been on, one of your pages.
  • Email sequence: is active in, completed, or is not in a given sequence.

Day windows accept anything from 1 to 3650.

Where segments get used. Pick one as a campaign audience on the Audience tab of any broadcast, see Sending your first campaign. Segments are also available inside automations as the condition "Is in a saved segment", see Automations and sequences.

Managing them. The list shows each segment's rule summary, its live contact count and when it was last changed. The More menu offers Edit, Duplicate and Delete. Deleting a segment never deletes contacts, it only removes that audience source from any emails pointing at it.
