Connecting your domain

Open Settings, then the Domain card, or go to Domain from the Site Settings group.

You connect a subdomain, not a bare domain. Pick a prefix from the dropdown, which offers www, hello, help, blog, app, pages, shop and go, or type your own. Then enter the domain you own next to it. A preview line shows the exact address you are about to create. Subdomains work on every registrar, which is why bare domains are not offered.

Add the DNS record. Once the domain is added, the card shows the record to create, laid out as Type, Name or Host, and Value or Target. It is normally a CNAME. Log in where you bought the domain, GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare or whoever else, and add exactly that record.

Then press Check status. The badge on the card tells you where you are:

• Pending. The record has not been seen yet. This is the normal state right after adding.
• Live. Everything resolved. The card shows a confirmation and a clickable link to the address, and your published pages can use it.
• Failed. Verification could not complete.

Give it time. DNS can take a few minutes or a few hours to propagate. Press Check status again rather than removing and re adding.

HTTPS is handled for you. There is no certificate to buy, upload or renew. Once the domain verifies, secure serving is set up as part of going live.

What usually breaks it:

• The record was added to the wrong host. The Name or Host field must match the value shown, exactly.
• An old record for the same name still exists. Delete the conflicting A or CNAME record first.
• The domain is already connected somewhere. You will see a message saying it is already connected, and the add is rejected.
• Your plan has a domain limit. If you are at your cap the add is refused with an explanation. See Your plan and usage.
• You checked too soon. Wait, then check again.

Removing a domain is immediate. The trash button asks you to confirm by name. The address stops serving your pages straight away.

Your web domain and your email domain are separate setups on the same page. Verifying one does not verify the other, though the page will suggest your web domain when you set up email. See Email sending settings.
